A small number of cars do things differently. The classic Citroëns are the best-known example: one central hydraulic system powers the suspension that gives them their famous floating ride, along with the steering and, on many models, the brakes. That whole system runs on a single green mineral fluid called LHM, and nothing else will do. Ordinary brake fluid attacks the seals inside it, and the damage is expensive.

If you own one of these cars, you already know the fluid can be hard to find. You also know what the car feels like when the fluid is old: it rises slowly in the morning, rides harshly and steers heavily.

Please read this before you buy. LHM is only for systems designed for it, which usually have a green reservoir cap or green markings. Never put it in a brake system that uses DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid, and never put DOT brake fluid in an LHM system. Either mistake can damage the seals and cause the brakes to fail. How to use

Check your owner’s handbook and the reservoir markings to confirm the system uses LHM mineral fluid.

To top up, clean around the reservoir cap, open it and add XADO LHM up to the correct mark. On cars with hydropneumatic suspension, check the level as the handbook describes, usually with the engine running and the suspension set to its highest position.

A full change involves draining the reservoir, cleaning its filters and refilling. The quantity varies by model, so check the handbook before you buy.
