Every engine has to breathe, and the place where it takes in air gets surprisingly dirty. In an older car or a motorcycle, that place is the carburettor. In a modern fuel-injected car, it is the throttle body. Either way, a sticky film of oil vapour, fuel lacquer and dust slowly coats the inside, and the engine starts to misbehave.

The signs are familiar. The idle wanders up and down, or drops so low that the engine stalls at a junction. It is hard to start. It hesitates when you press the accelerator, and it uses more fuel than it should. Mechanics often charge well for curing this, yet in many cases the cure is simply a clean.

This spray does the cleaning for you. It easily removes lacquer, oil and petrol films, scale, deposits and dust. In a carburettor, it clears the jets, passages, choke and float chamber, bringing back the performance the carburettor had when new. In a fuel-injected engine, it frees the throttle flap so it moves smoothly again, and cleans the intake manifold.

The engine idles steadily, picks up cleanly and wastes less fuel. It is safe for catalytic converters and oxygen sensors.

How to use

To clean a throttle body on a fuel-injected engine: warm the engine up and switch it off. Shake the can. Spray the cleaner onto the throttle flap, through the air inlet. Start the engine and keep the revs raised for 3 to 5 minutes.

To clean a carburettor: remove the air filter and start the engine. Shake the can, then spray plenty of cleaner onto all the visible parts of the carburettor, keeping the revs raised with the throttle lever while you clean.

For an all-round fuel system clean: before filling up, spray the cleaner into the fuel tank filler for 10 to 15 seconds for every 20 litres of fuel.

To clean an EGR valve: remove the valve, spray it generously, and wipe it dry after 1 to 2 minutes. Repeat if needed.

Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated place, away from flames and sparks, as the spray is highly flammable. Keep it off paintwork, and keep the can away from children.
