Guided Discovery: Engine Overheating

Temperature needle climbing?

Let’s keep your engine cool

Most overheating starts with the cooling system, and much of it can be fixed before it becomes an expensive repair.

If your engine is overheating right now, Pull over safely and switch off the engine. Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. The coolant is under pressure and can cause serious burns. Wait at least 30 minutes for it to cool before checking the coolant level. If the needle reaches the red, or steam is coming from under the bonnet, do not keep driving. That is how engines get badly damaged.

Your engine’s cooling system works quietly in the background, carrying heat away from the engine so it doesn’t cook itself. When it can’t keep up, the temperature needle starts creeping up, usually in slow traffic, on long climbs, or on a hot afternoon. Most of the time the cause is simple: there isn’t enough coolant, because of a small leak, or the coolant can’t flow freely because rust and scale have built up inside the radiator. That build-up is especially common here, where many cars are topped up with plain tap or borehole water.

Water lacks the protective additives of proper coolant, so the system slowly rusts and scales up, like the inside of a kettle. XADO’s cooling products deal with exactly this: they flush out the dirt, seal small leaks, and refill the system with long-life coolant that protects it for years.
