Few things make a driver’s stomach drop like a temperature needle climbing towards the red. You pull over, lift the bonnet and find the coolant low again, although you topped it up last week. There may be a green or pink stain under the car, or a sweet smell when the engine is hot. Somewhere, the cooling system is weeping.

A small leak like that rarely stays small, and an engine that runs low on coolant can overheat badly enough to warp or crack. So it is worth dealing with early, and it does not always mean a new radiator.

How to use

Warm the engine to its normal working temperature, then switch it off and let it cool a little. The engine should be warm but not hot. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine, as the coolant is under pressure and can scald you.

Shake the bottle thoroughly. With the engine off, pour the full 250 ml into the radiator or the coolant expansion tank. One bottle treats a cooling system of up to 12 litres.

Start the engine and let it idle for 5 to 10 minutes with the cabin heater switched on, so the additive reaches the whole system. Then check the coolant level and top up if needed.

For the best protection against future leaks, add it right after a coolant change.
