When an engine starts burning oil, most people fear the worst. There is blue smoke on start-up, the oil level drops between services, the power has faded and the spark plugs keep fouling. It sounds like worn piston rings, and worn rings mean an engine overhaul.

Very often, though, the rings are not worn at all. They are stuck. Piston rings need to move freely in their grooves to seal the cylinder, and over the years those grooves fill with hard, baked-on carbon. The rings jam, oil slips past into the combustion chamber, and compression leaks away. The engine behaves as if it were worn out when it is really just dirty.

Anticarbon is made to deal with exactly that. Sprayed directly into each cylinder through the spark plug or glow plug hole, it softens and dissolves soot, carbon, tar and varnish on the pistons, in the ring grooves, in the combustion chamber and on the valves. The rings come free and seal again.

Compression evens out across the cylinders, oil consumption falls, the plugs stay clean and the engine pulls properly again, all without taking the engine apart.

This is a workshop job. The spark plugs or injectors have to come out, and the engine oil must be changed afterwards. If you are not used to that kind of work, book it in at our Nairobi service centre. If the engine is using oil because of a mechanical fault, such as worn valve seals or a failed turbo, decarbonising will not cure it, and our specialists will tell you so honestly.

How to use

Warm the engine until it is warm but not hot, then switch it off. Remove the spark plugs, or the glow plugs or injectors on a diesel, and disconnect the ignition so the engine cannot fire.

Using the nozzle hose, spray the product into each cylinder. Refit the plugs loosely and leave it to work.

Remove the plugs again and cover the plug holes with an absorbent cloth, because dirty liquid will be thrown out. Turn the engine over on the starter for a few seconds. Refit the plugs and reconnect the ignition.

Start the engine and run it at varying revs for up to 15 minutes, while the softened carbon burns off and leaves through the exhaust. Expect smoke at first. Then change the engine oil and oil filter.

Keep the product off paintwork. Work in a well-ventilated place, away from flames, and keep the can away from children.
